A beautiful smile is more than just a nice cosmetic feature; it’s an important part of a healthy mouth and jaw. It helps people speak clearly, feel confident in social situations and build strong relationships.

What is called dental?

Most of us know that orthopedic dentist treatment can correct problems with the alignment of teeth, but it can also help fix a wide range of facial issues. If you’re dealing with a crooked, gapped or crowded smile, or have an improper bite (an overbite or underbite), an orthodontist can use braces and other dental appliances to fix it.

Orthodontic treatments can be performed at any age, but there is a special branch of orthodontics that was designed specifically for children while their mouths are still developing. This is called interceptive orthodontics, and it allows an orthodontist to address a child’s jaw development in order to prevent or reduce the need for extensive orthodontic treatment later on.

Unfortunately, many medical practitioners do not have the proper knowledge of orthodontics as a sub-specialty or understand its impact on the overall health and well-being of their patients. In fact, a recent survey of medical doctors in Nigeria found that they were unable to correctly identify malocclusions. This may be due to the limited time allocated for oral health education at medical school or because they tend to focus more on other major health complaints that are not related to the mouth. It is therefore important for dentists to work closely with their medical colleagues and refer any patient who needs dental intervention to an orthodontist.
